A LOTTERY winner is determined to keep his feet on the ground after scooping £10.4m.

Grandfather Paul Chapman is contemplating how to spend the cash after his numbers came up on Lotto Extra, on October 12.

The 59-year-old former ICI worker will never have to worry about money again after picking up his cheque for £10,417,926 last week.

Mr Chapman, who lives in the Roseworth area of Stockton, and his partner, Jean Higgins, celebrated with a drink at the weekend, but said they would not let their new millionaire status change them too much.

"At the end of the day, I had everything I wanted," said the father-of-three.

"I have got my house, the kids have grown up, I've got good health.

"I am just going to stick with my old mates."

Mr Chapman bought his winning ticket at a shop in Durham Road, Stockton, and was in the Buffs Club in the town when he learned of his win.

However, he said the enormity of the windfall had not sunk in yet.

He said: "I'm not as excited as when I've got a bet on the horses."

Asked how he planned to spend the fortune, he said he would make sure family and close friends were well looked after and then perhaps he would buy a new house with a big garden.

The grandfather-of-five said: "All the family are going to be secure for life. I have got a few mates, they will get a few bob."

And he said he would help out a local charity, which he chose not to name.

His partner said: "You think it doesn't happen to ordinary people. I am pleased for him. Hopefully, it won't alter him."
