THE Government yesterday signalled a new look for train services in the Midlands.

It also announced that the CrossCountry franchise run by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Trains company would be re-let in autumn 2007.

Two new franchises - to be called East Midlands and West Midlands - will be created, as well as a new CrossCountry franchise, with the three franchises replacing four existing ones.

Virgin said it intended to bid for the new CrossCountry franchise and said its punctuality figures had just hit a seven-year high
