GAVIN Strachan last night backed Hartlepool United boss Martin Scott's decision to send him out on loan, writes WILL SCOTT.

The 26-year-old was almost an ever present last term featuring in 38 games for the Victoria Park club and helping the team qualify for the League One play-off final. But this season Strachan has struggled to break in to Pool's starting line up and has appeared on only four occasions.

Rather than just let the defensive midfielder rot in the reserves Scott gave his blessing to him to spend a month on loan at League Two outfit Stockport County.

"I played a lot of games in the last two seasons and had a good end to last season, so people might be surprised I'm not playing more," said Strachan.

"But I respect the manager's decision and I'm fully behind him. I can see what he is trying to do at Hartlepool."

The Scot will make his debut for former Pool boss Chris Turner this afternoon when high-flying Leyton Orient - currently second in League Two - visit Edgley Park

The Hatters were relegated from League One last term and are currently struggling bottom but two in the Football League's lowest tier.

Strachan says he is relishing the challenge to change Stockport's fortunes and, linking up with a few pals who have the Pool connection.

He said: "I've played at Edgley Park a few times over the years, going as far back as when I was at Coventry in the old First Division and County were in there as well.

"I'm good friends with Robbo (Mark Robinson) and I know a few of the other lads as well - Jermaine Easter is one of them and I played with him at Hartlepool."
