The power of health for all: A DURHAM leisure centre is to host a health information and advice day later this month.

Durham City Council is staging the event, called Power of Health, on Tuesday, October 18, at Meadowfield Leisure Centre, between 9.30am and 3.30pm. Visitors will be able to get information and advice on topics including sexual and mental health, looking after your heart and cancer. The event is open to everyone in the district and admission is free.

THAILAND FUNDS: A table-top top sale to help fund a pupil's part in an expedition to Thailand next summer takes place at Shincliffe CE Primary School, off Beal Walk, High Shincliffe, near Durham, on Saturday, from 10am to 2pm. Tables, costing £5, can be booked by ringing Joanne or Daniel Gorton, on 0191-383 2418. Proceeds go towards Daniel's attempt to raise £3,000 to join a 30-strong party from Durham Johnston School taking part in a World Challenge expedition to Thailand, which will include rebuilding a school.

BAND PRACTICE: Members of Pittington Brass Band are reminded that weekly practice has been switched to the upstairs community room at the Community Association, in Sherburn Hill, near Durham, on Thursdays, from 7.30pm 9.30pm. The alternative venue is being used while repairs are carried out to Pittington Village Hall, following an arson attack. The band is keen to recruit fresh blood, particularly cornet players. SHELTER DEMOLITION: A shelter used by bowlers to stay dry during rain at Shotton Colliery Community Park, in east Durham, is to be demolished due to youngsters congregating there to drink alcohol on evenings. Shotton Parish Council agreed to knock down the shelter after consulting bowlers.

ROAD CLOSURE: An underpass providing vehicle access to the beach near Ryhope, between Seaham and Sunderland, will be closed until October 13 while electrical work takes place. Salterfen Lane underpass provides access to the beach from the A1018, near Ryhope Village. Alternatives are via Ryhope Beach Road and Ocean Road East.

DRAMA GROUP: The Chester-le-Street Drama Group presents When We Are Married, at the Walter Best Memorial Hall, at the Methodist Church, in Market Place, Chester-le-Street. The production will be staged at 7.15pm from Tuesday to October 14, and at 2.15pm on Saturday, October 15. Tickets are £4 from any member, or contact 0191-388 4548.

ANNUAL MEETING: The annual meeting of Chester-le-Street and District Citizens Advice Bureau will be held at the Chester-le-Street Library, Station Road, Chester-le-Street, at 6pm, on Thursday, November 3. Members of the public are invited to attend.

MEN'S SONG: Easington Colliery Methodist Church is to hold a concert on Saturday, October 15, featuring the Shiney Row Male Voice Choir. It will begin at 7pm and admission is £2.50.
