A TEAM of 12 supermarket workers have transformed an overgrown open space into an environmental haven.

The staff from Asda's depots in Washington responded to a call by Durham Wildlife Trust and cleared the land for Sunderland social services department as part of the company's community programme.

As well as clearing and weeding the site, the workers have created three raised beds, built a barbecue and installed a pond.

The site will be used for rehabilitation purposes.

Mark James, of the trust, said it was an example of what the private, public and voluntary sector could do by working together.

He said: "The area has a great deal of potential as a community resource.
