POLICE have been given more pedal power to tackle crime, thanks to a donation to help beat anti-social behaviour.

Thornaby Town Council gave £10,000 to Cleveland Police some of which has been used to buy three bikes and safety equipment.

Chief Inspector Ian Garrett said: "Ward police officers at Thornaby are starting to have an impact on solving community problems.

"The officers are highly visible on the streets and the new cycles will mean that they can cover larger areas and be seen by more people when patrolling.

"A recent survey in Thornaby has shown that the residents like this approach to policing.

"On occasions, officers on cycles are able to respond to calls for assistance quicker than the cars, as they can avoid traffic congestion and negotiate the alleyways in the area."

Beryl Robinson, Chairwoman of Thornaby Town Council, said: "We set aside cash for anti-social behaviour projects and were approached by the police.

"We thought the money would be best spent on alleviating the problems in the area and thought the cycles were a good idea."

The cycles and additional safety equipment were bought at the local GLG cycle shop.
