MEMBERS of boxing and sports clubs across the North are being invited to put their fitness to the test against the Royal Marines.

Posters and leaflets are being distributed at boxing clubs, sports clubs, youth centres and martial arts clubs across the region inviting members to take up the challenge.

Any other would-be Marines, aged 16 to 30, are welcome to join in the fun at RMR Tyne, in Newcastle, the North-East's Royal Marines Reserve Unit.

The Meet the Marines event is from Tuesday, September 27, until Saturday, October 1.

The Royal Navy is hoping the week will boost recruitment for what is one of the world's most elite fighting forces.

Each day, more than 150 young men and women can take part in the event, organised by the Royal Navy's Recruitment Team North-East.

Major Simon Bestwick, of the Royal Marines, said: "The amphibious infantry of the Royal Navy is quite rightly acknowledged as one of the world's elite fighting forces and can deploy anywhere in the world, at short-notice, to mount an assault in any terrain or climate.

"For this reason, they are required to undergo what is recognised as one of the longest and most demanding infantry training regimes in the world and we are keen to welcome more men who have what it takes to succeed as a Royal Marine Commando."
