INTERNATIONAL football returns to Darlington tonight as England Under-19s entertain their Belgian counterparts, writes LEE HALL.

The Darlington Football Stadium will host Martin Hunter's youngsters, as they begin preparations for next month's UEFA Friendly Tournament in Poland.

Already, over 2,500 tickets have been sold for tonight's friendly, which kicks off at 7.30pm.

Having staged an England National Game XI game against Belgium Under-20s in 2003, it is hoped tonight's fixture will provide another stepping stone towards Darlington eventually hosting an England Under-21 game at their two-year-old home.

Quakers boss David Hodgson believes the FA's decision to host an international friendly in Darlington demonstrates another step in the right direction for the club.

"It's fantastic recognition for us to be hosting an England game and I'm sure it will be a great night," he said.

Hunter has named two North-East based players in his 19-man squad. Sunderland goalkeeper Ben Alnwick and Middlesbrough's Adam Johnson are expected to figure. Boro's David Wheater has been forced to pull out through injury.

Among other up and coming stars on show tonight is Everton's James Vaughan, the youngest ever player to score in the Premiership. He was 16-years-old when he found the net on his debut against Crystal Palace last season. "The main purpose of the game is to prepare the squad for the Friendly Tournament in Poland and eventually the qualifying campaign for the 2006 European U19 Championship," said Hunter.
