A NEWLY-OPENED martial arts club is looking for members to learn Brazilian jujitsu.

Shaun Matthews, from The Redcar Martial Arts Club, is one of a handful of UK teachers of this method of self-defence, which relies on manipulating the opponent to obtain submission rather than beating them.

"The Gracie family of Brazil adapted Japanese ju jitsu so smaller people could defend themselves against attack," said Mr Matthews. "It relies more on things like neck chokes and arm locks than striking.

"The idea is to use your opponents size against them. It is one of the martial arts taught to US soldiers."

Two times European champion, Chris Crossan, instructor of Gracie Barra in Stockton, has said Mr Matthews' club will become affiliated to the Gracie Barra UK network very shortly.

Gracie Barra has a handful of Brazilian jujitsu clubs throughout the UK and regularly sends Brazilian instructors to the UK.

Classes are held on Thursday, from 6pm to 8pm at Coatham Memorial Hall, Coatham Road, Redcar. No experience is required and both men and women are welcome. Classes cost £5 for adults and £2 for children aged eight and older.
