MORE than 100 farmers learned how to earn more from their land at an event in Bishop Auckland.

Greenwell Farm held an open day allowing farmers to find out about changes in farming methods being encouraged under the government's Environmental Stewardship Scheme.

The changes mean that farmers can earn up to £30 a hectare by following guidelines on the use of their land.

Linda Vickers, who owns the farm, said: "We have introduced a programme of sensitive hedge management and drystone wall restoration to ensure valuable bird nesting sites are retained, as well as providing wildlife corridors through the farm.

"By following an integrated farming approach, the environmental and economic benefits are beginning to show. They have taken time, but it is clear that they are benefits that are long-lasting and sustainable."

Further free demonstrations are planned for the North-East. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call ADAS on (01954) 268301.
