DEVELOPERS have been given planning permission to build two apartment blocks on the site of a former gym.

Hedley Park Developments is replacing a disused ladies fitness centre in King Street, Spennymoor, with two buildings containing 12 flats.

The plan also includes creating 12 parking spaces in a courtyard behind the site, with an entrance from O'Hanlon street.

Four people living in the area objected, saying the flats would increase congestion and parking problems and neighbours would lose privacy.

But planning officers at Sedgefield Borough Council said the designs for the three-storey buildings were attractive, sustainable, and would be a good use of one of the area's few available brownfield sites.

The council's development control committee also approved plans for six terraced houses on the site of a former church in Wensley Terrace, Chilton Lane, Ferryhill.
