RESIDENTS are urging a council to think again over proposals to build two detached properties in Bishop Auckland.

Neighbours are objecting to plans for two buildings earmarked for land near Etherley Dene Farm.

The plans will be discussed by Wear Valley District Council's development control committee this evening and have been recommended for approval.

But residents say there is no need for more housing in the area, and that the new buildings will block their light and spoil their view.

Nigel Purdey, of Snowdrop Way, said: "People should be allowed to build houses, but not at everybody's expense. We moved into this area seven years ago, but if this goes ahead, it would almost make us want to sell up.

"It is so peaceful here and such a nice view, but if these houses are built, it would be all we'd be able to see."

Nine letters of objection from neighbours have been received by the council.

Planning officer Chris Baxter said: "Loss of view is not a material planning consideration.

"It is considered that the principle of the development is acceptable because it is located within the limits as defined by the proposals and maps in the Wear Valley District local plan."
