PROTESTORS battling to save a landmark pub intend to seek independent advice in the hope of finding flaws in the controversial proposals.
Plans to demolish the White Horse Hotel, in North Road, Darlington, and replace it with 55 apartments, have met with opposition.
About 100 written objections to the plans have been made, but protest leaders have urged people to add to that total and have called a public meeting this week to discuss further action.
Original plans for 64 apartments and car parking were rejected by Darlington Borough Council after listening to the protestors, who said the extra traffic would lead to more congestion, particularly around the Burtree Lane junction.
The new proposals are for 21 one-bedroom apartments, 32 two-bedroom apartments and two three-bedroom apartments.
But protestors do not feel the changes made by the developer go far enough to address the problems and are continuing to object.
The proposals, by Premier Homes UK, will be discussed by the council's planning committee on September 21.
Before then, Whessoe Parish Council is seeking independent planning advice in the hope it can reveal flaw in the plans.
Malcolm Guy, vice-chairman of the parish council, said: "We are looking at hiring a planning consultant, if we can afford one, to look at how feasible the plans are.
"We are still objecting to it as strongly as ever. Although the pub is a landmark in Darlington, we are making sure our objections centre on the flats, as there will be no sentimental value in the decision.
"It shocks me how many buildings are being pulled down to build new flats. It doesn't seem any thought is given to the buildings that are replaced either.
"About 100 people have filled in forms objecting to the plans, but that's not enough. We need everyone who feels strongly to send in their written opposition.
"We are trying to stop the development and are considering what action we can now take to help our efforts."
The parish council is holding a meeting on Wednesday at 7pm, in Whessoe Village Hall.
"We will wait for the outcome of the meeting, and will decide on any further action from there," said Mr Guy.
