WORK is about to start on a project to keep cycling enthusiasts off roads.
Residents of Brotton are helping eco charity Groundwork South Tees create a site for BMX enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy their sport safely, but away from traffic and hard surfaces.
Organisers said the project would encourage villagers to take up sport and get fit, bring people together and strengthen community spirit.
The community's Marshall Drive Active Recreation Centre has received funding from Barclays Spaces for Sports, which will provide coaching and equipment to encourage residents to take part and get the most out of the track.
Spaces for Sports is a three-year, £30m scheme to create and improve sports facilities in UK communities.
Project manager Claire Gallagher, of Groundwork South Tees, said: "Our experience shows that people really value the opportunity to have a say in improving their neighbourhoods and make them better places to live, work and play.
"Getting involved in these projects gives people confidence and makes us all feel proud of where we live."
