CHILDREN from 15 primary schools have put their swimming lessons to good use.

The 90 youngsters did battle in the sixth annual Northallerton Primary School swimming gala at Hambleton Leisure Centre.

"The gala is always a great morning at the centre - there is a real buzz of excitement about the place," said event organiser and centre swimming teacher Liz Bunting.

"The children really enjoy the friendly competition and it is great to see them using the skills that they have developed at the leisure centre.

"Congratulations must go to all the children who took part, as well as to the volunteers, staff and parents for their support."

Applegarth Primary School took the winner's trophy, after scoring 89 points. They were closely followed by Brompton Primary School, with 76 points, and Romanby with 74. Behind them were Broomfield with 72 points and Mill Hill with 67. The Simon Bailes trophy for small schools was won by Appleton Wiske Primary School, which scored 63 points.
