SEVEN out of ten recent fines for littering have been handed out to people living in the North Road or Denes area of Darlington, it has emerged.

Jeremy Good, of Orchard Road in the Denes area, investigated the matter after he was issued with a borough council fine, which he claims was undeserved.

Council statistics show 57 per cent of the fines issued over a six-week period were given to residents of the Denes area, and 14 per cent in the North Road area.

A furious Mr Good said in a letter to the council: "It is notable that no fines have been imposed on anyone in the West End where you may expect more of a fight, nor have there been any fines in some of the less salubrious estates such as Firthmoor or others to the east of the town."

A Darlington council spokesman denied it had targeted a specific part of the town. He said: "A lot of the calls we get are for litter dumped in back lanes and there are a lot of back lanes in that part of town so we are responding to more calls to that area."
