A NEW open-top bus service for tourists has taken to the roads of Durham City.

Cityseeing operates 70 tours worldwide and has open-top buses running in Newcastle and Gateshead and between South Shields and Sunderland.

The service runs half-hourly and visits attractions including Crook Hall, the city's medieval manor and gardens, the Oriental Museum and the DLI Museum and Art Gallery.

The double-decker does not negotiate the narrow streets of the peninsula leading to the cathedral and castle, but passengers can change to Durham County Council's Cathedral bus service at no extra cost.

The service will run as an experiment until September 11.

The firm's North-East manager, Andrew McGuinness, said passenger numbers had grown from 7,000 to 30,000 a year since it began in 2001.

A 24-hour Durham ticket costs from £3 for children to £14 for a family. For more information, call 0871 666 0000 or visit the web site www.city-seeing.com
