A team of primary school pupils has won £800 for their school and a trip to Edinburgh for first place in a design competition.

Burnopfield Primary School beat a team from St Cuthbert's RC School, Crook, at the Key Stage Two final of the annual Futures Challenge competition.

The three-stage competition has been developed to foster an interest in science and technology and encourage innovation at a young age.

Teams worked for two months with Newcastle-based Metnor Property Group to design environmentally-friendly buildings of the future.

Metnor is at the cutting edge of energy-saving construction methods and has recently set up a new venture to build 'super-friendly' timber-framed buildings.

Company director Brian Hamm said: "The quality of the presentations and displays was excellent and both teams had done a great deal of research into new technology and saving energy in the home. I was really impressed with the pupil's enthusiasm and knowledge and would like to congratulate the winners."

The winning team were Caitlin Watson, Katie Punton, Amy Railton, Kerry Riddell and Cameron Wright.

Key Stage Three winners, the Hermitage School, Chester-le-Street, and Key Stage Four winners Blythe Community College, both won £1,000 and a day out.
