THE aircraft carrier that is Durham's adopted ship begins its its last North-East visit today before being decommissioned.
The 25-year-old HMS Invincible, which had a key part in the Trafalgar 200 celebrations, will spend six days at North Shields before moving to the mouth of the Tyne to act as the platform for the start of the Tall Ships Race, next Thursday.
During its stay, the ship's crew will take part in a ceremonial parade and service.
The ship will also host tours and receptions for affiliates and groups, and will be open to the public on Saturday, from 1pm to 4pm.
On Sunday, a maritime fun day will be held on the banks of the River Wear, in Durham.
Many of the ship's company will be taking part in events and competitions, including a challenge to eat a 6ft sandwich.
Invincible Commanding Officer, Captain Neil Morisetti, said: "It is always a special occasion when a Royal Navy warship visits her affiliated city, but with HMS Invincible visiting Durham, while celebrating her silver jubilee, this is a very symbolic visit.
