ONE of Britain's biggest warships dropped anchor yesterday on her way north.

HMS Invincible stopped at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, en route to North Shields, North Tyneside, for the Tall Ships Race.

The aircraft carrier was the latest in a series of ships to visit the seaside town in the run-up to this weekend's Seafest celebration.

Last week, the Grand Turk, which featured as HMS Victory in the Trafalgar 200 celebrations, arrived, and the town's adopted ship, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Wave Ruler has also arrived.

Invincible is about to be decommissioned after 25 years' service, in which she has seen action in conflicts including The Falklands and the Gulf.

She is Durham's adopted warship and will today raise anchor and sail north for her last engagement -starting the Tall Ships Race next Wednesday.
