A DECISION on plans to build a village primary school was yesterday deferred for a site visit.

An application has been submitted for outline planning permission for the school at Low Lane, in Sutton under Whitestonecliffe, near Thirsk.

The parish council backs plans for a replacement school, but says the access lane to the site proposed is not wide enough.

The Environment Agency has voiced concerns over possible flooding in the light of last month's flash flood, which devastated parts of the village.

It has called for a flood risk assessment to be carried out before a decision is reached.

Governors say the existing school, which occupies a cramped site next to the village hall, will close if it does not receive permission to move. To remain on its existing site, the school must develop a playground.

North Yorkshire County Council has received five letters of objection about the scheme and 253 letters of support.

Those against said there was no room in Low Lane for vehicles to manoeuvre, park or drop children off, and that the area is prone to regular flooding.

Those in favour said the new site would provide much- needed facilities for the pupils and local community.

Yesterday, North Yorkshire County Council's planning committee deferred making a decision on the plans to allow councillors to visit the site.
