A FAMILY business closed its doors with a parting tribute to the town it has served for more than a century.

Generations of children have had their feet measured and bought their first footwear from Robinsons shoe shop in Bishop Auckland since it was established in 1887.

This week as owner George Robinson tidied out the stock room for the final time he praised the town centre which is leading the fight to revive high street shopping backed by Advertiser sister paper The Northern Echo's Shopping for a Future Campaign.

He said: "This has been the best two years we have ever had. Bishop Auckland has been good to us and now after a few dodgy years it is improving and will be a strong regional centre once again."

Mr Robinson, 69, who followed in the shoes of his grandfather and father to run the family business, said he was happy another family shoe business would take its place.

He said: "I'm a little sorry to retire but I am happy to be passing the shop on to another family. Graham and Craig Hamilton will be opening in mid-August. I hope they have as much success as we have had."

Also retiring with Mr Robinson is loyal employee Dennis Franklin, who at the age of 81 completed 66 years at the business which has evolved through the years from shoe makers and repairers to retail.

Mr Robinson said: "The staff have been wonderful and the customers have made retailing a pleasure.

"I really have enjoyed my working life making many friends both in the shop and through my suppliers.

"I am now looking forward to spending more time with my wife Noreen, our family and friends.''

Bishop Auckland town centre manager Derek Toon said it was good to hear the town praised.

He said: "I wish Mr Robinson all the best in his retirement. It is sad to see such a long established business going but it is also nice that the shop will be let again straight away."
