Police today named the man who drowned in a reservoir at the weekend as Stephen James Forrest of Doxford Walk, Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

The 23-year-old was out with family at Cod Beck Reservoir, near Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, on Saturday when he went into the water for a swim.

It is believed he swam out a distance before getting into difficulties.

A police underwater search unit spent all Saturday afternoon and Sunday looking for him and then returned again on Monday.

His body was seen by a police officer patrolling at the reservoir early on Tuesday morning and was recovered by firefighters.

An inquest into his death is expected to be opened and adjourned this afternoon.

The reservoir is a well-known beauty spot popular with day trippers. Last summer 17-year-old Darren Ian Dey, from Yarm, near Stockton drowned there after trying to swim from one bank to the other.

Both police and Yorkshire Water have this week issued warnings about the hazards of swimming in lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
