A SCHOOL on a run-down estate has been given a glowing report by education chiefs.

Whinney Banks Primary School, in Middlesbrough, has achieved the highest accolade that school standards watchdog Ofsted can give.

It was the first in Middlesbrough to be inspected under Ofsted's new system for judging schools and has achieved the highest grade.

The report said the school provided an outstanding education for its pupils and that it was committed to striving for excellence. The news was welcomed by parents and pupils in an area hit by crime and anti-social behaviour.

The 414-pupil building was opened two years ago after the closure of the infant and junior schools.

Ofsted praised many aspects, including the standards of teaching and care given to all children, especially those with special needs.

They judged many aspects to be outstanding and were impressed with the standard of art work. They said pupils behaved very well, loved school and were rightly proud of its achievements. In their letter following the visit, they say: "You have a very happy, outstandingly good school".

Headteacher John Wiffen said the report reflected the tremendous work that all of the teachers and support staff had put in, both before and after amalgamation.

"This is great news for the whole community, where the news is not always as positive.

"We hope that this report will underpin our excellent reputation and encourage more people back into the area as new houses are built."
