THE war on crime will reach new heights tomorrow as police and other agencies launch an all-out effort to curb criminals and their activities.

A district-wide No Crime Day is to be staged across Hambleton - and the public are being urged to do their bit.

Extra uniformed patrols are being mounted and the police are asking people to play a part by reporting any suspicious or anti-social activity in their neighbourhood.

Acting Inspector Peter Walker said: "This is a day-long blitz involving a range of policing disciplines.

"The most important element, though, is the involvement of the community - we want to involve the energies of those living in Hambleton to be our extra eyes and ears.

"Our aim is to provide Hambleton with high-visibility policing to reduce and deter as much crime as possible."

Throughout the day, neighbourhood policing teams and other officers will carry out high-visibility foot patrols in their areas.

At the same time, other patrols will target potential hotspots where crime or anti-social behaviour has been reported in the past.

During the day, the force's mobile community police office will be stationed in the car-park at the Tesco store, in Northallerton, with staff available to offer crime reduction advice

A licensing officer will visit pubs and other licensed premises - especially those in areas where there has been trouble previously - giving advice to licensees and discussing ways of reducing anti-social behaviour in those area

Detectives will also be double-crewing with traffic officers on major routes in and out of Hambleton to provide a visible deterrent to travelling criminals and to carry out stop-checks.

All neighbourhood watch members are being put on alert to report any suspicious sightings to the police.

And partners including the fire brigade, Post Office and local authorities have been also been asked to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and report it straight away.
