A COUNCIL'S success in stubbing out smoking in its offices and grounds has earned it an award in a scheme recognising employers for promoting clean air.

Teesdale District Council struck gold in the National Clean Air Awards, which are sponsored by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Anne Beeton, chairwoman of the Durham Dales Primary Care Trust, presented the award to council chairwoman Madeleine Walton and council leader Ken Robinson.

The award scheme is the first of its kind in the UK to recognise employers who implement effective no-smoking policies.

Councillor Robinson said: "Like many authorities, we recognise the health risks involved in smoking, both to smokers and passive smokers, but unlike some others we have gone the extra mile in declaring all our grounds and premises to be entirely smoke-free.

"As a result, I believe district council premises will not only be healthier, but much more pleasant places to work and visit."

Anyone who wishes to give up smoking can visit their GP or contact the health trust's smoking cessation advisers on (01388) 458835 or the NHS Smoking Helpline 0800 169 0169.
