POLICE searching for a man who disappeared while swimming in a reservoir recovered a body from the water yesterday.

A police officer patrolling by Cod Beck Reservoir, near Osmotherley, North Yorkshire, spotted the body. It was recovered by firefighters.

The man, a 23-year-old from Teesside disappeared while swimming at the reservoir, a beauty spot popular with day trippers, on Saturday afternoon.

He had been enjoying a day out with his family and is thought to have taken to the water to cool down from the scorching weather. It is believed he swam out a distance before getting into difficulties.

A police underwater search unit spent all Saturday afternoon and Sunday looking for him, and returned again on Monday.

Police had hoped the man would be formally identified yesterday, but his name had not been released last night.

Both police and Yorkshire Water have issued warnings about the hazards of swimming in lakes, rivers and reservoirs.

On July 10, a ten-year-old girl died after she went into the River Swale at Catterick Village.
