A FAST-GROWING new ball game has crowned its first world champions after a gruelling final in the North-East.

One of two teams from Northallerton College, in North Yorkshire, took the honours in the final of the Rock-it Ball competition, held in Darlington.

The fast and furious game was invented by three Yorkshire businessmen and is increasing in popularity in the UK, US and New Zealand.

A cross between dodgeball and lacrosse, it involves teams playing with a catcher pole and ball.

Points are scored by hitting opponents with the ball.

Six teams took part in the final at the Dolphin Centre, and Northallerton College's teams came first and second.

Jenna Shardha, 16, of Northallerton, said: "It is a great experience being the first world champions, if a bit weird."

Peter Starr, 16, of Thornton-le-Moor, said: "It always sounds good to say you are world champions of anything, even if it is a new sport."

Head of PE Ruth Curtis said her colleague, Emma Dempsey, generated interest in Rock-it Ball at the college.

She said: "The students really seem to have taken to it and are looking forward to playing again next term.

"It is a great game because it can be played at so many levels.

"The important thing is that it is fun and keeps the students fit and active."
