THE organisers of a music event that showcases local talent hope that it will continue in future years.

The Live Music Day in Durham has been going for almost 20 years but it looked as if last year's event was the last after Musicians Union withdrew the funding.

But local union branch secretary Keith Smith and the Durham City Forum have found the money to hold it again on Sunday, in the city's Market Place, along with a display of cars from garages.

The event features a wide range of music performed by local groups and musicians, some of whom are trying to establish themselves.

Colin Wilkes, of the forum, said: "At the moment I think that provided the forum can keep the funding going it will continue.

"I would like to think it does because it is a nice event on the calendar and it gives some of the up and coming bands the chance to perform on a decent stage.''

The timetable for the free event is: 12.30pm to 1pm, Hetton Lyons Brass Band; 1.15pm to 1.45pm, Cameo, string quartet playing light and popular classics; 2pm to 2.30pm, Captive Audio, rock trio; 2.45 to 3.15pm, Morgan featuring Brothers Davidson, Durham guitarist/singer-songwriter; 3.30pm to 4.15pm, Jimi Savage Band, ranging from heavy rock to blues and fusion; 4.30pm, to 5pm, Utopia, harmonic jazz.
