SUNDERLAND Football Club vice-chairman John Fickling was honoured by his hometown university yesterday.
He received an honorary fellowship from the University of Sunderland for his outstanding contribution to the region, particularly during his time at the football club.
Mr Fickling, who studied mechanical engineering at Sunderland Polytechnic, has been instrumental in helping chairman Bob Murray take Sunderland forward over the past ten years.
Between 1975 and 1985, he had various management and engineering positions with the National Bus Company throughout the country.
In 1986, Mr Fickling was part of a successful management buyout of a subsidiary bus company.
Following the sale of his transport interests, Mr Fickling joined the Sunderland AFC Board, in 1995.
He became chief executive, a post he held until 2000. He played a central role in developing the 49,000-seater Stadium of Light. From February 2000, Mr Fickling has been vice-chairman of the club.
University vice-chancellor Professor Peter Fidler said: "John has made a highly significant contribution within both of his fields and will inspire our graduates as they celebrate their academic success and embark on their careers."
