CHILDREN held a party to celebrate their school's birthday last week.
Kirk Merrington Primary School, near Spennymoor, marked its 80th anniversary with a special assembly and a performance by members of the school's dance club.
Durham County Council chairman Ernie Foster, and his wife, Ann, whose son Jonathan attended the school, joined the celebrations and cut the birthday cake.
Coun Foster, a school governor for more than 25 years, said: "I've seen three headteachers and been singing Kirk Merrington Primary School's praises for a long time.
"Lets hope the school is here in 80 years time."
Headteacher Helen Williams said that the school had been a happy place for 80 years and is looking forward to a bright future.
