A COUNCIL team that supports elderly, disabled and vulnerable people in their home has gained national praise.

Sedgefield Borough Council's home improvement agency has received Charter Mark accreditation, making it the first in the North-East to gain a Government award for excellence.

Particular praise went to the commitment and enthusiasm of staff who help residents make their homes more accessible and comfortable with repairs and fixtures such as hand-rails. Aspects of the service could now be cited as a good example to authorities across the country.

Sedgefield Mayor Jackie Piggott said: "The achievement of this national award that recognises high standards of customer service for the agency is a real credit to the staff involved.

"The Home Improvement Agency provides an essential service for some of the most vulnerable people in the borough by assisting them in repairing and adapting their homes."
