TURKISH midfielder Emre Belozoglu will undergo a medical at Newcastle United today after arriving on Tyneside last night to finally complete a move to the Premiership.

The Magpies have agreed a fee - around £4.5m - for Inter Milan's inventive left-sider and personal terms were negotiated a couple of weeks ago.

Now, after being met at Newcastle Airport by manager Graeme Souness last night, Emre will make the switch to St James' Park within the next 24 hours, providing there are no hiccups.

''We have worked hard to get him here,'' said Souness. ''Hopefully we can tie everything up and get him signed as he will be a real addition to the squad. We are just going over the final details. There are a few things still to be decided, but I am confident we can do that.''

The 24-year-old will become Newcastle's second major signing of the summer and he follows Scott Parker to the club following his £6.5m transfer from Chelsea.

And the capture of Emre will help reduce worries of supporters who have become frustrated with the way six players have left the club without being replaced.

Laurent Robert, Aaron Hughes, Andy O'Brien, Craig Bellamy, Patrick Kluivert and Darren Ambrose have all departed, while only Parker has been on the arrival list.

Lee Bowyer looks to be the next, and possibly the last, to leave Newcastle and West Ham United are the latest club interested in taking him back to his London roots.

And Souness insists Emre will not be the last summer buy.

He said: "If we land Emre and we get certainly two more players at that level and then we maybe get another couple of players who would be important members of the squad - but we have to be realistic, we cannot go out and keep buying Scott Parkers, only Chelsea can do that at this time.

"But if we land Emre and we can get another couple of high-class players and we can be a wee bit lucky with injuries, I feel we can certainly challenge for a Champions League spot."

Fulham's Luis Boa Morte has also been on Souness' shopping list but there is a fear he will not be arriving at St James' Park.

Souness has long-admired the winger and was close to agreeing a deal in January.

However, after penning a new three-year deal at the turn of the year, Boa Morte pledged his future to Craven Cottage.

But the 27-year-old is still available if Fulham's valuation is met so Newcastle will have to stump up £5m if they are to land their man.

And Souness remains reluctant to pay that sort of money.

If Emre does sign he is not likely to travel to Slovakia for this Sunday's Intertoto Cup tie with ZTS Dubnica.

Emre's appearance in the North-East last night came just hours after Newcastle learned they will have to book a place in the UEFA Cup the hard way.

An InterToto semi-final date with Deportivo La Coruna will more than likely be on the cards should Dubnica be overcome.

Progress for Newcastle will mean a two-legged affair in the last four with either Deportivo or Slaven Koprivnica - a tie that makes the much-maligned competition suddenly look a little more attractive.

Deportivo finished ninth in La Liga last season, 33 points adrift of champions Barcelona. They secured a place in the third round with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Buducnost.

Even if Souness guides his side beyond those two stages there is likely to be another difficult hurdle to overcome in the final.

Newcastle could face Marseille, who play Swiss side Young Boys in the third round, or Italians Lazio, who meet Tampere of Finland.

Lazio finished tenth in Serie A, while Marseille, the side which knocked the Magpies out of the UEFA Cup at the semi-final stage two seasons ago, were fifth in Le Championnat.

But Souness said: "I am not thinking beyond the first game in Slovakia on Sunday because it would be wrong to do so. I have been in football long enough to know that the minute you start taking your eye off the ball, you can be punished."

Firstly Dubnica stand in Newcastle's way. They were beaten by Slovan Liberec, who were losing finalists last year.
