VISITORS to one of the region's most popular tourist attraction had the chance to learn more about a rare breed of horse.

The Cleveland Bay is at risk of dying out but, at Beamish Museum in County Durham, efforts are being made to ensure the breed's survival.

Yesterday, visitors had the chance to see the museum's stallion Traquair Jason being paraded and being ridden by a horseman in 1900s costume.

Cleveland Bay mares and foals from the museum's stud were also on display in the fields around Pockerley Manor.

A museum spokeswoman said: "In recent years, the Cleveland Bay has been designated as a category one (critical) rare breed by the rare Breeds Survival Trust, and much has been done to ensure that these magnificent horses do not disappear completely.

"Cleveland Bays are increasingly successful as competition horses in many equine disciplines."
