WORK is due to start on a major coastal protection scheme in a village troubled by flooding.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is outlining details of the £680,000 plans for the east Cleveland village of Skinningrove.

Letters are being sent to residents detailing the work, which is expected to start on Monday, July 18, and be complete by October.

Councillor Eric Empson said: "This is another piece of essential work to protect the village from the elements, increasing the level of protection from coastal flooding to one in a 100-year storm events.

"We have involved residents in the planning process, with consultation meetings and exhibitions and I am sure they will be pleased to see this important work getting under way."

The work, which has received a Government grant, will involve widening the beck and opening up the channel under the third span of the Beach Road bridge.

A 26-metre long rock spur will also be built at the mouth of the beck to limit waves travelling up the beck.

Construction contractor Volker Stevin, from Gates-head, will face a 10mph limit when they go through the village to the A174 to minimise disturbance.

The route for the disposal of the surplus excavated material and the delivery of tons of armour stones will be via Cliff Terrace, the Square, Mill Lane and Skinningrove Road to the A174 at Mill Bank.

Coun Empson said: "Every effort will be made to reduce the amount of nuisance to residents, and we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience."
