A SWIMMING pool rescued from closure by volunteers was officially opened yesterday.

Wolsingham Community Swimming Pool was closed in March last year after Wear Valley District Council withdrew a £20,000 annual subsidy.

But volunteers formed Wolsingham Community Pool Limited and run the pool as a non profit-making charity.

Government chief whip Hilary Armstrong officially opened the pool, which has already had more than 2,800 visitors since May.

"The community is voting, or rather swimming, with their feet," said director Maggie Deytrikh. "We are delivering what the people want, when they want it.

"It is great seeing the pool busy and great to welcome Mrs Armstrong back."
