YOUNGSTERS will travel through time tonight and step into the shoes of survivors of the Second World War.

Pupils and staff at Broom Cottages Primary School, in Ferryhill, will relive the 1940s with music and drama to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of the war.

Students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College and other groups in the village have worked with residents who survived the conflict to record their wartime memories.

Those thoughts have been adapted by local playwright Stuart Dixon, a former pupil of Broom Cottages Primary School, and worked into a script for the school.

Teacher Kath Carr, who with colleague Sharon O'Kell produced the show, said: "It is a wonderful show with 56 pupils and staff playing the parts of older people in the town and performing music.

"The children have gained everything from this show, it is as close to living the life that people had during the war as possible so they appreciate what people went through."

Last night's show was filmed by a crew making a DVD and compiling a book to show how the town is using a £20,000 Home Front Recall grant to mark the occasion.

Tickets for tonight's performance at the school, 6pm, are £2 at the door.
