MOTORISTS are being urged to drive carefully in Fishburn village this morning as it hosts a traditional miners' parade.

Fishburn Band will march through the village, from Fishburn Terrace to the Workingmen's Club, at about 8.15am before joining Durham Miners' Gala later in the day.

About 40 band members will accompany the Fishburn Colliery banner to a memorial sculpture on the village green to pay tribute to the miners who died down the pit.

Band vice-president Billy Elliot said: "The roads aren't busy at the time we're parading anyway, but we want people to take extra care this year.

"The police are unable to give us the same assistance as usual, but we will wear high visibility jackets and be considerate of other road users.

"This march is part of the area's heritage, it is a tradition that means an awful lot to local people - particularly miners' widows."

Musicians Judy and Peter Evans will make their annual walk from Fishburn to Durham in aid of band funds.
