A CAMPAIGN to halt a rise in incidents of summer drink driving has been launched by Hambleton Community Safety Partnership.

Positive breath tests across North Yorkshire last summer increased by 17 per cent on the previous year. Nearly 450 people found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

In a bid to encourage people not to drink-drive, a simulated car crash will be on display throughout the summer in the Hambleton district.

"We hope that this car crash will shock people into thinking twice before they have a drink and then drive," said Simon Gibson, group manager of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"Not drinking and driving is important at all times of the year, but the summer months seem to be particularly bad.

"People pop out for a drink after work, or spend summer evenings at barbecues, and do not think of the consequences of then getting behind the wheel. We urge anyone who wants to have a drink to leave their cars at home or use another form of transport."
