A TRANSPORT museum has been awarded a £500,000 grant for its restoration.

The Monkwearmouth Station Museum, in Sunderland, will receive the money from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The museum is part of the region's industrial and transport heritage and houses a collection of railway and transport artefacts, including rolling stock, bicycles, temporary exhibitions and an original 1866 railway station booking office.

Helen White, senior manager at Tyne and Wear Museums, said: "This is an extremely exciting time for Monkwearmouth Station Museum.

"The funding will allow us to secure the long-term future of the museum and to offer visitors an exciting new range of galleries and events.

"The museum is a great asset to the city of Sunderland and we are delighted that local people will be able to enjoy these new facilities."

New gallery areas will have interactive displays to encourage visitor involvement in the exhibitions, making learning about the history of travel and transport in Tyne and Wear fun as well as educational.
