THE vehicles transporting world leaders around this week's G8 summit at Gleneagles were powered with biodiesel from the region.
The biodiesel, supplied by Petroplus, which has its UK headquarters on Teesside, is produced by Argent Energy from tallow and used cooking oil.
The greener fuel was part of an initiative from the Government to reduce the emissions of all activities around the G8 summit.
Petroplus' Bio-plus blend fuel is made from five per cent biodiesel from Argent Energy and 95 per cent low sulphur mineral diesel.
It will result in G8 Summit vehicles emitting approximately five per cent less carbon dioxide, the main gas responsible for global warming.
Dr Stephen Thomason, marketing director of Petroplus Refining Teesside, said: "The UK Government is taking the use of alternative fuels very seriously. We are working hard with the Government to make sure all users can benefit from this fuel and making a positive impact on the environment in the future."
