EXTRA pedal power has arrived on Teesside with the completion of a link in the National Cycleway Network.

It has taken three months' and £200,000 to build a 1.1 mile stretch of the route by the River Tees between Newport Bridge Middlesbrough and the Tees Barrage at Stockton.

The scheme was funded by the Millennium Commission, the Northumbrian Water Environmental Trust, Stockton Borough Council and Middlesbrough Borough Council.

Councillor Ken Hall, Middlesbrough Commissioner for Best Value said: "Promoting cycling and walking is an essential part of Middlesbrough's transport plan. The cycleway provides greater choice for people to get around as well as being a more sustainable form of transport. It will also be an important facility to help people live a healthier lifestyle.

"During the coming year, we will be developing the route from Newport Bridge into Middlesbrough town centre. This will join up with National Cycle Route One that runs south from the town centre towards York."

The Royal Bank of Scotland has paid for a milepost sculpture close to Newport Bridge.
