Leeholme have taken the lead by one point in Division One at the halfway stage of the season after second-placed Shotton suffered a disastrous defeat when they played Bowburn.

Shotton bounced back with an 8-2 home win over King George V although the most relieved club must be Coxhoe who have been near to the bottom for most of the season but then produced a l0-0 win over Elm Tree, Stockton on Saturday.

In Division Two, Ever Ready, who are always strong at the beginning of a season, have won eight of their nine games and share top spot with Addison Park who were promoted from Division Three last year.

Wheatley Hill, who have to play all their fixtures away from home until they get a new green laid, are still at the foot of the table but are improving and did succeed in gaining a draw with Murton.

Both Murton and Brandon have been fined by the League Secretary for failing to play a cancelled game within the 14 day stipulated period.

Newly admitted club, Wingate are enjoying early success in Division Three having won seven of their eight games but as they had a bye on Saturday it allowed Newton Hall to close the gap at the top with a 10-0 win over Witton Gilbert.

The Eston Charity Shield 2000 football tournament, which raises money for local children's charity, Jennifer Trust for Muscular Atrophy, has now signed up all 16 teams required.

The format is based on Euro 2000 and will begin with four groups of four with teams progressing to quarter and semi finals, just like the international tournament.

It runs from July 28 to August 15 at Mannion Park, Grangetown, Middlesbrough and a presentation night is held on August 17 where there will be entertainment and possibly a Middlesbrough FC player presenting the trophies.

The teams involved are Bells Stores FC, Eston and Normanby Dynamo, Eston and Normanby Social, Eston Labour Club, Eston Ship Inn FC, Eston Villa, Gables, Harrys Place (formerly Crown and Anchor), Huntsman FC, Hydro (formerly Elgins), Marske WMC, Newmarket West Two, Normanby Hotel, North Ormesby Institute, Teesside Link FC and Yorkshire Dragoon FC.
