STUDENTS across Teesside are being given a dramatic warning about teenage pregnancy.

The CragRats Theatre Company is visiting schools to talk to 14 and 15-year-olds about the issues surrounding young pregnancy.

The tour started yesterday, at Hallgarth Secondary School, in Acklam, where pupils were encouraged to direct and produce a short play, which they then performed in front of their peers.

The production is part of an awareness initiative by the University of Teesside's Centre for Practice Development.

The centre has been awarded money from the Teesside Health Action Zone to undertake the project in Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland areas.

Health Action Zone project leader Dr Marion McDonald said: "Young people can be overloaded with leaflets, posters and brochures, and there is a danger that the message is not being heard.

"Using drama as a message carrier for sexual health issues is more effective as it is the young people themselves who have decided what the message is and how it will be better received and understood."

Other schools involved in the theatre project are Coulby Newham, in Middlesbrough, Dormanstown, Cromwell Road Primary Schools and West Redcar Secondary School in Redcar and Cleveland.
