A TRUST fund is being set up to ensure the future of the Durham Miners' Gala.
NUM officials are devising a way of raising money for the Big Meeting's non-political events.
Following the withdrawal of main backer Michael Watt, a New Zealand millionaire, more than £30,000 was donated by organisations and individuals to save this year's event. The NUM's solicitors, Thompsons, have pledged £100,000 and other major contributions are being sought for the fund.
The timetable for Saturday's gala is: 9.30am to noon, parade to The Racecourse, Green Lane; 10.30am onwards at The Racecourse, entertainment; noon to 1.15pm, speeches; 1.40 to 2.25pm, world music; 3 to 3.45pm, Durham rock band Sugarwood; 3pm, gala service, Durham Cathedral, including dedication of Fishburn and New Herrington banners
