RESTORATION work on Saltburn Pier is progressing well.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is delighted with the way the £1.8m project is going. Head of leisure services, Peter Lane, said: "We always knew there would be a degree of disruption, but from the feedback we are getting, people seem pleased the works are taking place.

"It is noisy at times, but that is only during essential piling. We are going to get a pier which will stand up to the sea for decades to come.

"Before work started, there were real concerns that the pier would not even last another winter because of its deteriorating condition."

Weather permitting, the works are expected to be completed by October and should ensure the pier - which opened in 1869 - can survive for another 100 years.

The scheme is being funded by a £995,000 Heritage lottery grant, £465,000 from Europe and £400,000 from the council.

The pier itself and pier car park have been closed for safety reasons. Amusements and a nearby cafe and shop are open as usual and the recently-refurbished Victorian cliff lift is operating seven days a week.
