BRITISH Transport Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old man who was hit by a GNER Inter City train on the Newcastle to Kings Cross line.

Neil Heaviside, who worked as a welder and engineer and lived with his parents Les and Lynne in Gordon Terrace, Ferryhill, was found at Thrislington Crossing, a mile north of Ferryhill Station, on the afternoon of Saturday, June 24. He died from severe multiple injuries, consultant pathologist Clive Bloxham told an inquest that opened at Bishop Auckland magistrates court.

Darlington and South West Durham coroner Colin Penna adjourned the hearing after his officer PC Dennis Canney gave evidence of identification.

A spokesman for British Transport Police at Darlington said: "We are making inquiries and a full report will be submitted to the coroner."

A funeral service was held at Ferryhill Village Methodist Chapel on Monday.
