DURHAM singers will premiere a new work specially written for them when they perform their summer concert this weekend.

The motet Christus est Stella (Christ is the Morning Star) is a setting of the words of the Venerable Bede by distinguished local composer Will Todd.

It will be performed this Saturday in Elvet Methodist Church, Old Elvet, Durham.

Will Todd is best known for work including St Cuthbert, written for Durham cathedral's Millennium celebrations in 1995, and the cantata The Burning Road, commemorating the Jarrow March.

Born and brought up in the city, the 30-year-old won a music scholarship to Durham School and studied music at Bristol University. He now lives in London and his busy composing schedule includes an opera to be performed in New York later this year. St Cuthbert is also being recorded.

Choir director Alan Oyston, who commissioned the work, said: "Will Todd is an immensely talented young composer and it is a privilege for the choir to have such an impressive piece written for us.

The concert starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Durham Tourist Information Centre, Market Place, or on the door.
