AT THE half way stage of the season Newton Aycliffe 1st Xl are clear leaders of the North-East Durham third division after a nervous two-wicket win at Belford House in a match sponsored by Great Lakes.

The decision to bowl first was totally justified as Aycliffe completely demolished the home side's batting for just 45 in 28 overs.

Pick of the Aycliffe bowlers was Peter Roberts, who fully exploited the unpredictable pitch to finish with 4-11 from seven overs.

In reply, what should have been a walk-in-the-park for Aycliffe's batsman turned into a horror show as a combination of over-confidence and bad shots left them reeling at 34-8 and facing their first league defeat of the season.

However, for the second time in a fortnight, number ten batsman Ian 'Hatty' Hannant came in and rescued Aycliffe, this time with a match-winning 12 not out to see Aycliffe home by just two wickets in the 23rd over.

Newton Aycliffe is still looking for junior cricketers, in the age range of 14 to 17, to help strengthen their U18 side. The youngsters play every Thursday in the Durham County Junior League.

Any youngster interested should contact, in the first instance, secretary Lee Weldon on (01325) 312424 for further details.
