RESIDENTS on a troubled Durham estate undergoing a revamp are looking forward to a day of fun this weekend.
Sherburn Road, which is getting a multi-million pound facelift, is holding its annual fun day in the grounds of Laurel Avenue Community Centre on Saturday, between 11am and 3pm.
The Making Music Project of Gilesgate will be performing songs and dances from the 1950s to the present and wearing costumes of each era.
The group, which includes able-bodied and disabled youngsters, is run by Durham County Council's community education service.
There will also be a mini sports day, five-a-side football match between police and residents, children's rides, performance by a local drama group, fancy dress competition, table top stalls, fortune teller and side shows.
Harry Appleby, chairman of the Sherburn Road Community Action partnership, says the event's popularity has soared in recent years.
"Last year we attracted more than 600 people who had a really good time and this year we're hoping for even more."
